Sensorimotor gating is a normal protective mechanism in the brain that functions to gate or filter irrelevant sensory stimulation, allowing for coherent thought. Deficits in sensorimotor gating may result in stimulus overload and the misinterpretation of sensory information. Sensory gating describes neurological processes of filtering out redundant or unnecessary stimuli in the brain from all possible environmental stimuli. Also referred to as gating or filtering, sensory gating prevents an overload of irrelevant information in the higher cortical centers of the brain. Sensory gating can also occur in different forms through changes in both perception and sensation, affected by various factors such as "arousal, recent stimulus exposure, and selective Citation: Vargas JP, Díaz E, Portavella M and López JC (2016) Animal Models of Maladaptive Traits: Disorders in Sensorimotor Gating and Attentional Quantifiable Responses as Possible Endophenotypes.

Such deficits are noted in patients suffering from illnesses like schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease , and in people under the influence of drugs, surgical manipulations, or mutations. Sensory input may be abnormal and trigger focal dystonia, or defective “gating” may cause an input–output mismatch in specific motor programs. Altogether, several observations strongly support the idea that sensorimotor integration is impaired in focal dystonia.

Alth Impaired Sensorimotor Gating in Unmedicated Adults with Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder Abstract. Functional and structural imaging studies suggest that obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms arise from INTRODUCTION. Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a severe, chronic psychiatric Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of startle response is a well-established neurophysiological marker of sensorimotor gating ability in psychiatric patients including those with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Traditional diagnostic scales are based on a number of symptoms to evaluate and classify mental diseases. In many cases, this process becomes subjective, since the patient must calibrate the magnitude of his/her symptoms and therefore the severity of his/her disorder. A completely different approach is based on the study of the more vulnerable traits of cognitive disorders. Sensorimotor gating is impaired in male patients with bipolar disorder and depression. Originally identified in pat The family of sensorimotor gating disorders: Comorbidities or diagnostic overlaps? Background: Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is an operational measure of sensorimotor gating and is impaired in a family of neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by abnormalities of inhibitory function. Adults with autistic disorder (AD) exhibit clinical features of inhibitory deficits, such as restrictive and repetitive behaviors, that may be explained by deficits in sensorimotor gating. Altogether, a reduced sensorimotor gating as an effect of supraphysiological hormonal status, anxiety disorders, SSRIs, and catecholaminergic genotype, implicate the putative relevance of lower PPI as an objective biological correlate of anxiety proneness in pregnant women. sensorimotor gating deficits in schizophrenia, and speculate on future applications of this model in the development of novel therapeutics for this disorder. 17 May 2018 Startle habituation, sensory, and sensorimotor gating in trauma-affected refugees with posttraumatic stress disorder - Volume 49 Issue 4. 30 May 2018 Sensorimotor gating is impaired in male patients with bipolar disorder (BP) and depression, according to results published in Psychiatry.

Prepulse Inhibition (PPI) of startle is an operational measure of the pre-attentive filtering process known as sensorimotor gating. Originally identified in patients with schizophrenia, PPI deficits have been observed in multiple but not all psychiatric disorders. A deficit in sensory gating, with excessive attribution of salience to environmental events, is thought to underlie a number of psychiatric conditions, including psychotic disorders like schizophrenia (Kapur et al., 2005). Just as a threatening environment leads to emotional hyperthermia in normal individuals, so it is likely that excessive salience will be associated with emotional hyperthermia in certain psychiatric conditions. The findings suggest diverse sensorimotor gating profiles amongst subgroups of violent offenders, with comorbid psychosis and DPD showing most impairment.

This review underlines the importance of abnormal sensorimotor integration in the pathophysiology of movement disorders. Thus, sensorimotor and sensory gating measures can be used as informative and independent neurophysiological markers for studies investigating neuropsychiatric disorders and may well constitute separable endophenotypes. Functional and structural imaging studies suggest that obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms arise from dysfunction in cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuits. It has therefore been hypothesized that neurophysiological tasks subserved by these circuits should be abnormal in OCD patients. One neurocognitive probe associated with this circuitry is prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the 2001-08-21 · Pronounced sensorimotor gating abnormalities have been reported in schizophrenic patients (Braff et al.
